4. Final feliz / Happy End / Finale felice

English below...
Italiano in basso...

Ahora a disfrutar África.

Pero esa, será otra historia…(fotos debajo)

English

Some views are hypnotizing. It happened to us with the Registan in Samarcanda, the Everest mountain, Canyonlands, Machu Picchu or the Devil´s Throat in Iguazú. The last time it happened with the Fitz Roy, or Chaltén mountain. We couldn´t stop feeling thankful for being there, peacefully, soaking up all that beauty. When things like this happen, life is even more beautiful.

Sometimes nature gives you the opposite and puts you through Inquisition-like ordeals. We are talking about the Patagonia wind…We prepared ourselves very well mentally, since in Patagonia mental strenght is much more important than strong legs. The influence of the wind is so powerful that it can make you pedal anything between 3km/h to 35, depending from where it blows. It is very changeable, but most of the times it comes from west and southwest. It was very confusing for us to read in internet that the “wrong” direction to cycle was from south to north. Maybe the wind changes from month to month or from year to year, but we never had wind coming from the north. The cyclists we met going the opposite direction were flying and one told us he managed to do 190 km in one day…We had a tailwind coming out from El Chaltén, El Calafate and Porvenir. The rest was miserable. When we had a crosswind, it was so strong that we had to fight against the gusts that would throw us into the road or into the ditch. Sometimes we had to walk and push the bike at a 45 º angle to be able to stay upright. More or less, everyone gets tortured by the wind.

We saw the Torres del Paine surrounded by a pink colour at sunrise, when we were approaching the Chilean border. We woke up very early, hoping to avoid the hours of strongest wind, but it was useless because the wind was already blowing like crazy. By the time we got to Chile the weather had changed, as usual when we entered this country. We also had to spend two rainy days and nights in the bus station of Cerro Castillo, with a nice fire, until we had enough and decided to leave despite the black clouds. We just did not care anymore. The bad weather made us focus more on our goal, Ushuaia. From Puerto Natales to Punta Arenas, wind and more wind and lots of Chilean indifference, the desire to enter the Tierra del Fuego grew day by day, so when we crossed the Magellan Strait and set foot on the island it was as if our distant goal was not so far away anymore. There we really enjoyed the lonely roads, isolated from the civilisation, land of guanacos, sheep, Estancias, gauchos and some lost penguins. The itinerary of the Estancias has been wonderful. We had nice experiences in them, apart from the Estancia Rivadavia where, even if it was snowing and a dreadful wind was blowing, they did not let us camp behind of a semi abandoned house. They kept us waiting in the wind for a long time and at the end told us “you cannot camp here, go to the woods”. We just had asked for a wall…

Tolhuin is synonymous of bakery “La Unión”, croissants and hospitality. The same day eight touring cyclists showed up: two French, four Swiss and us. Together we left Tolhuin, together we camped the last night at the Lago Escondido and together we arrived to the end of the world. The last kilometres were never-ending. From the Garibaldi pass we had like a deja vu which brought us back to Alaska, with a very similar landscape. We remembered the exact moment when we started cycling in Anchorage on a sunny day of May 2013, with Jorge and Vanesa, and heaps of memories about this beautiful continent about to finish came to our mind. When we left Alaska, 31.500 km ago, Ushuaia was a distant and remote place. Now Alaska is the distant and remote place. When the city appeared and we saw the welcome columns with the name Ushuaia written on them, it was a hair-raising moment and inside we were crying of emotion. It was a magic and unforgettable feeling, a moment for eternity.

But that´s not the end of it. It was 36 years since I, Aitor, had seen my Argentinean family for the last time. And they live here, in Ushuaia. To see them, hug them and spend so much time with them has been the top of the happiest ending possible. We had decided to spent the festivities with them and to encourage a bit more my aunt, who is having a difficult moment with her health. She is a fighter and we admire her for this. Despite of everything the good mood prevailed and we laughed a lot, they say that laughing is the best therapy. My uncle´s asados, my aunty´s cakes, Chancha´s desserts, Sole´s pizzas and fix-ups, Sam´s risottos, the mountain trips with Laura, the surprise we gave to my aunty when she saw her sister (my mom) appear, everything is already recorded in our memory.

And now what? The dream goes on and Africa is the next stop. Such a different continent motivates us a lot and this is why we decided to go. We are about to fly to Cape Town to cycle north along the Eastern side of Africa. Even if to finish in Cairo would be the icing on the cake, we do not know how far we will go. We always say that we travel because it makes us happy and the journey would finish when our bodies request so. Cyclotherapy does not travel by objectives, so Cairo is not one either. We have the feeling that the end is getting near. We feel like changing our mindset, it is time to do different things, to catch other trains of life. Like we did in the last years, we will let our hearts decide.

Goodbye family. Goodbye Ushuaia. Goodbye Argentina. Goodbye South America.

Now it´s time to enjoy Africa.

But this is another story…(pictures below)

Addio famiglia. Addio Ushuaia. Addio Argentina. Addio Sudamerica

To contemplate the “Fitz Roy” from the Laguna de los Tres has been one of the highlights of the whole American continent and the trip. It´s a relaxing view, perfect to isolate yourself from the world and forget about its existence…
The name “Fitz Roy” was chosen by Dr. Moreno in 1877 in honour of the captain of the famous ship “Beagle”, that went through Patagonia some years earlier. However, this is not its ancestral and native name. The real name of this sacred mountain is “Chaltén”, and in aonikenk language it means “steaming mountain”. The peak is covered with clouds most of the time, so they thought it was a volcano. Hopefully this and many other mountains will gain their native names back.

This sign, that at first glance could seem a joke, is the perfect description of the Patagonia wind. If you are heading west or southwest you are screwed, because you will have a headwind. We personally prefer to have a headwind rather than a crosswind, which is very dangerous.

To cycle the Chilean side of the Tierra del Fuego until the Radman border crossing was a perfect decision, from every point of view (thank you Aihnoa and Koldo)…
On the Argentinean side of the Tierra del Fuego we cycled on unsealed roads as much as we could and we got to meet several Estancias along the way. They are not the same as they were but something is left.
The owners of the Estancias are all full of money and do not live at the place. Some of them only visit a couple of times in a year. People who work there usually are wonderful people, gauchos who love the quiet life in the countryside and never doubt to put a teakettle on the stove to warm us up with a good mate.

There my family (Aitor) is waiting for us 36 years after seeing each other for the last time. The happiness multiplied by 1000. But when we saw the Ushuaia sign, the first person we thought about was Ermanno, Eve´s dad, who left us at the half of the journey. Wherever you are, this is dedicated to you Papoccio!!!!!!
